The Deerfield Valley spreads below these motorists driving along Whitcomb Summit in western Massachusetts. The landscape of this region is a product of hundreds of millions of years of intense geological activity. High mountains rose and eroded over millions of years. Ice Ages covered the region with sheets of ice. The land sank under the weight of ice as thick as two miles in some areas. It rose again as the glaciers melted and retreated. Waterways like the Connecticut River began shaping and cutting through the land as they flowed across the valley floor.
