This aerial view of South Deerfield, Massachusetts, was probably taken in the late summer: the crops are nearly all out of the fields, yet leaves remain on the trees. It probably dates from around 1910, given the type of postcard (no white edges showing). The village stretches from north (to the left) to south (right), but the image has left out two crucial landmarks: the town center, which is just off to the right, and Mt. Sugarloaf, also off-image to the right. Stretching behind the village, though, is the long ridge of North Sugarloaf Mountain. As with most of Western Massachusetts in 1910, its slopes are almost entirely treeless, a remarkable contrast to the landscape of today.
