Lucia (Fairchild) Fuller (1870-1924) was only twenty-three years old when she was asked to be one of four artists to paint a mural for the Woman's Building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Like many exhibitions at the fair, Fuller's "Women of Plymouth" has a Colonial Revival theme. It depicts some of the earliest "American" women performing daily tasks with simplicity and grace. Exhibitions at World's Fairs not only catered to middle-class tastes, they helped to form that taste. The popularity of everything Colonial would explode over the next several decades.
