The 44th Massachusetts Regiment was mustered into service on September 12, 1862 in Reedville. It was reviewed by Governor Andrew on October 15th, and on the 22nd embarked on the steamer "Merrimac" heading for Beaufort, North Carolina. The regiment landed at Morehead City on October 28 and then traveled by train to Newbern where it became a part of Stevenson's Brigade. The 44th was organized as a nine-month regiment, so the men were only required to serve for that amount of time. After service in North Carolina, the regiment returned to Massachusetts in June 1863 and was mustered out of service on the 18th. Recruits often sat for photographs which could then be given to friends and loved ones.
