Dr. Stephen West Williams (1790-1855) wrote this biography of his famous ancestor the Reverend John Williams (1664-1729) in 1837. It places Williams' life in the context of Indian/Colonial conflicts and focuses on Reverend John Williams' captivity ordeal after his capture in a French and Indian raid on Deerfield, Massachusetts, in 1704. Captivity was a searing event, and tended to brand permanently those who experienced it, as it did John Williams, "the Deerfield Captive."
