In 1848 the Second Franklin County Courthouse was built facing the town common. It was a Greek Revival structure, bearing all the typical classical elements of a government building. After a massive fire on Main Street destroyed much of the downtown, the State of Massachusetts determined that in order to serve its purpose, the Courthouse must be made larger and fireproof. In 1873, the town renovated the building. There was an addition put on, it became more fireproof, and the gothic revival façade that you see here was created. In 1954 it was converted into Greenfield's Town Hall and nearly returned to its original appearance.
