In 1875, Charles Hart Ashley (1860-1925) moved from Iowa, where he was born, to Deerfield, Massachusetts, to live with an uncle at the north end of the street. By that time, the Jonathan Ashley house, c.1730, had been moved to the back of the lot and was used for storage. A new house had been built on the site of the old house in 1869. Charles Hart Ashley inherited the house and farm from his uncle and continued the farming tradition; his principal crop was tobacco. He was active in helping to organize the Connecticut Valley Tobacco Growers Association. By 1905 times were apparently good enough that he felt able to invest in foreign stock.
