The Washington Monument was begun in 1848. Lack of funding and political controversy halted construction in 1854, leaving the monument only one third complete. Construction resumed in 1879 and the monument was completed in 1885. Designed to resemble an ancient Egyptian obelisk, the Washington Monument became an instant tourist attraction. Visitors can either climb 893 steps to the top, or use an elevator. This postcard view of the Monument at night was produced in 1929, a period when night photographs were popular.
