To enable horses to work more efficiently in marshy land, clogs could be attached to the horse's feet providing a larger area to support the weight much like people using snowshoes. Horses had a variety of specialized shoes or other attachments such as this one to increase their efficiency in difficult conditions, such as mud or snow. Since the horse was the main method of local transportation until the automobile, every advantage was required to help them to function effectively.
