The fast-growing number of factories at the turn of the twentieth century created concern among many people that traditional forms of work and crafts would be lost. This concern helped start the Arts and Crafts movement of the same period, a movement that included and was led by many people in the town of Deerfield, Massachusetts. Deerfield was home to the Deerfield Industries, a cooperative association of craftspeople producing handcrafted, useful objects for the home. Chauncey Thomas made this hand-thrown redware vase around 1910. Thomas lived in Deerfield from 1910-1912 and served as vice-president of the Deerfield Industries.
