Why were board games so popular? They were just that in the early 19th century; games painted or scratched onto a piece of board, usually with a different game on each side of the board. They were simple to make at home with a slab of wood, ink or paint, and checkers of dried corn or beans. The pieces were easily moved and simple to hard games could be made up. This board game is very typical of the period with checkers on one side and "Nine Man's Morris" on the other. Nine Man's Morris is a harder form of the game "Tic Tac Toe".
