People donate all sorts of unusual items to museums. This wooden sign, painted by Dorothea Hyde Allen in 1923, hung from a tree outside a tea room and shop operated by Matilda Hyde in Deerfield, Massachusetts. When the shop closed, the sign was saved and donated to Memorial Hall by a descendant, Frederick Hyde, in 1981. Without the sign to remind us, we may forget that Deerfield once had a shop where one could stop for afternoon tea.
