This photograph of C. Alice Baker (1833-1909) taken by Allen & Rowell of Boston, appears to be mounted on a card. Miss Baker was living in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at the time. Her hairstyle and black silk dress are both typical for the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. In this period, visiting in the afternoon was in fashion and the cards served to announce your visit if the hostess was not at home.
