MARINE CORPS, Rifle Range
Winthrop, Md.

My Dear Maurice:-

I was mighty glad to get
your letter and hear, of all the people and
activities up that way, which you mentioned.
That is sure great about the Professer and
it is very important work, also, I have seen
a lot of it in the past few months, and
your brother is just the one to teach it in
an interesting way so that the men well
enjoy it and put more pep in it. He always
did have a way of presenting things so that
they got across. Please give him my best when
you next see him. I shall write "His Honer"
the Mayer of Ercanaba a card congratulating
him on the election.

I have been here at the Rifle Range
about a month, learning all about, and how
to shoot the rifle, pistol and machine gun

America entered World War I in 1917. Tom Ashley (1894-1918), who graduated from Amherst College in 1916, enlisted in the Marine Corps in that year. His training began in Winthrop, Maryland, where he learned, among other things, how to shoot a rifle, a machine gun, and a pistol. He tells Maurice that life in the marine corps suits him and that he and the others are eager to get to Europe to participate in the war, or, as he phrases it, "we are all anxious to get down to some real work and get across."
