Marine Barracks
May 14, 1917

Dear Pa:-

Thanks for dispensing of the car, I am fixed
up all-right now and have more than enough
to pay up everything I owe, which I have done
with the exception of my uniforms, Besides I
found on arriving that I had been drawing
pay since Apil 13, the date of my appointment,
at the rate of $140. per month. So you see I was
drawing a good salary around home when I
thought I was merely living off the community.

I umpired a ball game between two battleships
in the fleet championship series the other The
captain of one of the ship objected to a decision,
but I figured that even though he ranks with
a Brigadier General of the Army, all are equal
in sports and so showed him where he
could get off.

Full of good humor, this letter from a son to his father tells of his early days in the Marine Corps soon after the United States entered World War I. He reassures his parents that there is no cause for worry yet, as he expects to be in this country at least until the following November. Tom Ashley was a graduate of Deerfield Academy and of Amherst College, class of 1916, and spent his life on the Ashley farm at the north end of the Deerfield street.
