Taking his new responsibilities seriously, Tom Ashley uses his "officer of the day" duty to write to his mother to once again request that a package be sent to him in Virginia. Since civilian clothes are allowed during part of the training days, he requests some clothes from home "to wear out." He has bought the required uniforms but complains that they are white and are easily, for him, anyway, soiled. Again, he reassures his parents that there are no plans for his company to leave for France.
