Foot stoves, like this one made of metal and wood, were handy to warm one's feet in a cold corner of a room or in a pew in the unheated meeting house. The coals, stored in the iron box in the center, and accessible through the pierced dooe, would need to be replaced periodically to insure continued warmth. The handle is a carrying convenience and the decorative holes serve to allow the heat to be distributed.
