Dr. Charles Canedy of Greenfield found himself in this Russian hospital in the winter of 1918-19 in the far eastern town of Vladivostok. The area had been occupied by Japanese and American troops during the Russian Civil War (1917-22) in an effort to prevent the area from falling to Bolshevik (later Soviet) troops. Seven thousand American troops garrisoned the town until 1920. Vladivostok fell to Bolshevik (Soviet) troops soon after that withdrawal.
