The Talented Sketch Class.

The sketch class of the Arts and Crafts Society, which was organized about five years ago, and which is just closing its second year under the instruction of August us Vincent Tack, is considered to have done very unusual work. The members of the class are Miss Washburn, Miss Edith A. Lowell, Miss Mabel Comstock, Miss Harriet Allen, Miss Lena Stratton, Miss Lucia Russell, Mrs. Edward Reece and Miss Marie Day. It is remarkable in a town of this size to find as much talent as is shown by the young women constituting this class. They have devoted a great deal of time to the work, meeting regularly twice a week for about two and a half hours. Mr. Tack comes in to criticise about once a fortnight.

Most of their time has been spent upon portraiture. Among interesting models have been Oscar Dix, Mr. Bolton, Simeon Phillips Oscar Donelson, Ethel Davis, Peter Codina, the little Italian who a few years ago was a conspicuous figure about the streets and known by everybody as "Petey," was one of the class's best models. He took to posing very naturally and was as cherubic as could be wished. Many of the leading young people of Greenfield have posed. The selection of models is considered to have been very favorable, as it has included faces of more character and individuality than the average professional model.

The class went out sketching to Deerfield a few days ago, Mr. Tack accompanying to criticise the work. They will do some work through the summer.

In the early 19th century girls were often taught to sew and draw as part of their schooling. As co-education opened up more academic subjects to women, they spent less and less time on the applied arts. Middle and upper class girls began to take drawing lessons in their communities. In this case, young ladies in Deerfield were being instructed by August Vincent Tack, a talented portrait painter who would make a name for himself nationally.
