Our Greenfield Artists.
The pictures by Mr. Tack are masterly portraiture, the crown of all in exquisiteness
of technical quality, as also in reverent delineation of a choice personality,
being the portrait of Mrs. Tuttle. The head of Mr. Higginson is admirable in
its salient vigor and presentment of a full contour, modeled with unhesitating
brush. Artists will recognize in the portrait of Mrs. Rogers a success of great
rarity in its management of the problem of lighting. Very clever is Mr. Tack's
sketch of Mr. Hutchins, who has worked beside him for some months. Mr. Tack
is one of the men who do not stand still in their work. Every year shows growth,
and an ambition never to be satisfied with less than the best that can be done.
Will Hutchins has surprised and gratified his friends by a rich succession
of nocturnes in which he has managed to lose the uncertain daring and experiment
of his previously shown work and comes out as a genius in presenting certain
phases of the mystery of earth and sky.--Springfield Republican. |

Augustus Tack was born in Pennsylvania in 1870. At age 13 he moved to New York, eventually studying at the Art Students League with noted American Impressionists William Merrit Chase and John Twachtman. He opened a studio in 1894 and began a portrait painting business that would support him throughout his life. By the late 19th century he divided his time between New York and Deerfield and was very involved in the Deerfield Arts and Crafts Society.
