The recent changes in our public schools, taking out the upper grades and placing
the scholars in the academy, was done without the knowledge or sanction of the
school board. All books taken from the town schools are town property and must
be returned.
The ladies' society of the Unitarian church gave a most pleasant sociable at
the parsonage last Wednesday evening. In spite of the rain a large and happy
company assembled. The occasion had been secretly planned to come on the birthday
of the minister, Rev. George W. Solley. After supper a large oil paining in
gilt frame of the old brick parish church on meeting house hill, which is the
work of Artist George Spencer Fuller, was presented to Mr. Solley. A graceful
presentation speech was made by Rev. H. E. Morrow of the Congregational church
which was responded to by Mr. Solley. The sociable was also a particularly enjoyable
one because of the presence of visitors and friends.
The Saturday club has voted itself a vacation and will assemble at the call
of the officers.
Mrs. Ashley, the promoter of so much good music in our village, took a vacation
of a day at Holyoke to attend a public rehearsal and afternoon concert of the
Holyoke oratorio society. Mrs. Ashley's particular attraction was the pianist,
William H. Sherwood, as she was his pupil in New York. |
