The following is the default level label: Written with pride for their town, Daniel White Wells and Reuben Field Wells speak of the virtues of the early settlers in Hatfield. Originally a part of Hadley on the east side of the Connecticut River, Hatfield, on the west side, split off amicably in the 17th century. The sons and daughters of Hatfield prevailed against the French, the Indians, and the British and some went on to settle central New York state, the Western Reserve and St. Louis on the Mississippi River. With residents who believed strongly in education, the town furnished the founders of two Massachusetts colleges, Williams and Smith.
