said County or his Deputy or any or
either of the Constables of the Town
of Montague within the same County.
Whereas Benoni Grover of Montague aforesaid
upon the nineteeth day of June last being
a Private Soldier in the train band of the
Company of Foot commanded by Caleb
Thinsley In the Regiment of Militia in
the said County of Hampshire com=
=manded by Joseph Mayo. was duly
notified to appear upon the twenty third
day of the same June in the Town of Montague in the County of aforesaid with
and Equipment as the Law of this
Commonwealth directs and the said
Benoni Grover in Violation of the said
Law did unnecessarily neglect to appear
whereby he hath forfeited and ought to
pay the sum of ten shillings to the
user directed by Law. And the said
Benoni Grover having been duly sum=
=moned to appear before me John
Williams one of the Justices of the
Peace for the County aforesaid to shew
cause if any he had why a Warrant
of Distress should not be issued for the
same sum -- Appearing did not shew
sufficient cause why the same Warrent
should not be issued—

The following is the default level label: This warrant states that Benoni Grover, a private soldier in the militia, of Montague has been charged 10 shillings for failure to appear and to show just cause. Grover had been ordered to appear "with his Arms and Equipment as the Law of this Commonwealth directs" on June 23, 1789. He did not show up and was fined 10 shillings. The fine was compounded by charges of 19 shillings 4 pence for a total of 29 shillings and 4 pence. He is to be sent to the jail in Springfield or Northampton until he pays. By the time all costs are assessed, the 10 shilling charge has escalated to 3 pounds 4 pence.
