Job Barstow of Leyden in said County, Clerk of the
ninth company of foot in the second regiment of
the Second brigade in the fourth division of the militia in the com=
=monwealth of Massachusetts, this eleventh day
of Novr in the year of our Lord seventeen
hundred & eighty eight That on the twenty
=ninth day of Sept Last past Michael Frizzel of said
Leyden- the commanding Officer drew forth the
said ninth company of foot for improving them
in the military exercise being the fourth
time he had drawn them forth for that pur=
=pose in one year, directing them to appear
at the appointed place of parade First Meeting
house in said Leyden armed & equipped as
by Law required & Thomas Rose yeoman a pri
-vate soldier in the train band on said com
=pany had ben directly & Legally named to
appear equipped as by Law required at the
time & place appointed--aforesaid & the

This is a complaint against Thomas Rose of Leyden, Massachusetts, for not appearing as summoned for militia training day. All able men in Massachusetts over the age of 16 were required to appear for militia training day armed and equipped as required by the law. Thomas Rose failed to appear on September 29, 1788 and was fined 10 shillings 2 pence, which as of November 11, he still had not paid.
