Anti-Slavery Convention.

At a meeting of the friends to the cause of Emancipation, holden at the North Parish in Amherst, on the 8th of September last, it was

Voted that it is expedient to invite an Anti-Slavery Convention for the Counties of Hampshire, Franklin and Hampden.

Voted to choose a Committee of five to prepare and cause to be published in the public papers of the above Counties a notice of such a Convention.

Chose Rev. Wm. W. Hunt, Amherst,
Sylvester Judd, Northampton,
Rev. Theophilus Packard, Jr. Shelburne,
Samuel Williston, Easthampton,
Rev. Samuel Ware, Amherst.

Voted- That this Committee select the time and place for the anticipated Convention, secure persons to address the assembly that may be convened; and prepare a Constitution for a Society that may be formed.

Pursuant to the above votes of the Committee would give notice to the citizens of the counties Hampshire, Franklin and Hampden, that an Anti-Slavery Convention will be holden at Northampton on Wednesday the 13th of January next, at 11 o'clock A.M. and all our fellow citizens in the above Counties who are friendly to the cause of Emancipation are hereby respectfully invited to attend.

The 1830s were the heyday of the formation of anti-slavery societies. Associations were established at the town, county and state levels. This article reports on a meeting held in Amherst, Massachusetts, on September 8, 1835, calling for an Anti-Slavery Convention for Hampshire, Franklin and Hampden counties to be held in Northampton on January 13, 1836. It asks that all people who are in favor of emancipation attend this convention. The Greenfield Gazette and Franklin Herald was the newspaper in Greenfield, Massachusetts, from June 26, 1827 to June 27, 1837. It changed its name to the Gazette & Mercury.
