Whately Rummery.- We understand that the proprietors of this establishment intend to apply to the Commissioners of Franklin county at their next meeting for license. We trust the commissioners will still see reason to refuse to grant them one. That establishment has been a curse to the whole community around; it has been the source of supply for the Northampton drunkards. Before it was broken up, we are informed, that every Saturday night a vehicle was despatched, freighted with jugs, to this place; the jugs were filled, returned and distributed to the various owners. This was to keep Sunday with. Now we would respectfully inquire if the public good demands that such an establishment be licensed?-

The Temperance Movement began in the early 1800s and by 1833 there were 6,000 local societies in the United States. This article, reprinted from the Hampshire Gazette, hopes that the Franklin County Commissioners will refuse to give a license to a rum distillery in Whately, Massachusetts. The writer feels that it is a curse to the entire area, and that when previously in operation, supplied the "drunkards" in Northampton. The Greenfield Gazette and Franklin Herald was the newspaper in Greenfield, Massachusetts, from June 26, 1827 to June 27, 1837. It changed its name to the Gazette & Mercury.
