A Temperance Meeting was held in Rowe in this County on the 4th of
July inst. Address by Rev. T. Strong of this town. The meeting we are
happy to learn, was largely attended. The constitution of the Society was passed
round after the conclusion of the address, and 23 names were added to the pledge.
Rowe is a healthy and pleasant town in the north-west part of this county,
and is actively engaged in the great work of the Temperance reform. One fact
is deserving of notice, as showing the healthful and of course prosperous condition
of the place, and that is, in the whole town, as we learn, including a population
of towards 1000 inhabitants, such a thing as intemperate person is scarcely
to be found. The entire rank and file of the red nosed corps, numbering
less than three, which is attributable mainly to the fact, that there
has been no tavern in the place for abut 30 years past.
Another temperance meeting was held on the same day, at the meetinghouse of
the First Cong. Society in this town,- address by Rev. Mr. Chandler.
Not being present at either place, we are unable to speak of the character of
the performances, but judging from former specimens, we think we hazard nothing
in saying that they were adapted to the occasion and well calculated to do good.

The Temperance Movement began in the early 1800s and by 1833 there were 6,000 local societies in the United States. The town of Rowe, Massachusetts, held a meeting of the Temperance Society on July 4, 1835. This article reports that there are few, if any, intemperate people in town owing to the fact that there had been no tavern there for the past 30 years. Greenfield also held a meeting on July 4. Many temperance speakers, like the Rev. T. Strong, were ministers. The Greenfield Gazette and Franklin Herald was the newspaper in Greenfield, Massachusetts, from June 26, 1827 to June 27, 1837. It changed its name to the Gazette & Mercury.
