SLAVE CASE IN CONNECTICUT.- A case was lately tried in Hartford,
before the Supreme Court, judge Williams presiding, similar to that of the slave
Med, in Boston, last year. Lucy Jackson, the slave, in the present case, was brought
by one Bullock from Savannah into Connecticut, a year or two since, and had lately
expressed fears lest she should be taken back to the South. She was encouraged
to attempt to get her freedom by application to the Supreme Court. This she did,
and a writ of habeas corpas was issued in her behalf. Her master then endeavored
to persuade her that it was all in vain for her to continue her suit, and under
his restraint, she told a friend of his that she did not want to leave him, and should
not have thought of it if she had not been beset by others to do it; but when
she came into court she insisted that it was her wish to be free and that the
case should be tried. Accordingly it was tried, and resulted in the decision that
she was free, as no slave could be brought into the State and kept in
bondage without a violation of the laws of the State. This decision is not more
in consonance with the laws of the State than it is with justice and humanity. |

States which did not allow slavery were called free states. They had laws which stated if a master brought his slave into the state, the slave was automatically free because slavery was illegal in that state. This article reports on the case of a slave named Lucy Jackson who had been brought from Georgia into Connecticut during the 1830s. When she became concerned that she would be taken back to a southern state, she was encouraged to bring her case to court. The Connecticut court ruled that she was free, since the laws of the state prohibited slavery. The Gazette & Mercury was the newspaper in Greenfield, Massachusetts, from June 27, 1837 to July 13, 1841, when it changed its name to the Gazette & Courier.
