BUCKLAND

Female School.

THIS SCHOOL, designed only for the winter, will be under the instruction of Miss MARY LYON, the ensuing season. The success of the Sanderson Academy in Ashfield, the two winters past, under her care, in addition to that of her private school in this place the two preceding winters, has given her friends an increasing confidence in the utility of the plan. During these four seasons, there has been a unity of object, though some additions and improvements have been made every successive year. No long list of Books has been presented to the public,- no pretence has been made to an extensive course of study, not even compared with the length of the limited term of instruction. But it has been the object to direct the attention of the young ladies to such subjects, and in such a manner, as will assist in preparing them for active life. It is the general testimony of the patrons of this SCHOOL, that its utility has been particularly manifest in preparing teachers for district schools. In promoting this object, the monitorial ystem, which has been united with other methods of instruction, has turned to very good account.

The school will commence, Wednesday, Dec. 3d, for a term of 16 weeks. Tuition, $4,00 for the term, to be paid at entrance. Some remittance will be made to those who necessarily leave the school on account of sickness.

Board, including fuel, and lights, may be obtained near the school for $1,17 a week. The number accommodated by one fire will not exceed four.

It is very important that the young ladies enter at the commencement of the term.

Books and Stationary can be procured near the school on reasonable terms.

There is currently no available "Beginner" label. The following is the default level label: This is a notice of the winter term for the Buckland, Massachusetts, Female School. The instructor for the winter of 1828-9 was Mary Lyon (1797-1849) who was born in Buckland. She attended Sanderson Academy in Ashfield, and upon graduation, taught at the school. She then operated the Female School which was intended to prepare young ladies to teach in district schools. In 1837, Mary Lyon founded Mount Holyoke College. It was the country's first institution of higher education for women. The Greenfield Gazette and Franklin Herald was the newspaper in Greenfield, Massachusetts, from June 26, 1827 to June 27, 1837. It changed its name to the Gazette & Mercury.
