HOW THE NEWS OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT WAS RECEIVED.- The joy at the passage of the amendment of the Constitution by Congress, forever abolishing slavery throughout the United States, has been received with the greatest joy throughout the loyal states. Gov. Andrew issued orders for a national salute of 100 guns to be fired on the Commons; also recommending that the church bells be rung one hour, and suggesting similar demonstrations of rejoicing throughout the state. In all of the large towns and cities, bells were rung, cannon fired, &c.

The legislature of Illinois was the first to ratify the amendment. It took action upon it on Wednesday. The legislature of Maryland passed the ratification on the same day, by a large majority. The legislature of Rhode Island, and Michigan on Thursday. There are 22? legislatures now in session all but three of which Delaware, Kentucky and New Jersey, will adopt the amendment at once, and possibly these three may.

It had already been passed by the Senate on April 8, 1864. The news was received with great joy in Boston, where Governor Andrews ordered a 100 gun salute and the ringing of church bells. It was reported that 22 legislatures were in session and all but three would ratify it. The Gazette & Courier was the newspaper in Greenfield, Massachusetts, from July 20, 1841 until June 24, 1932. Before 1841 the newspaper's name changed quite frequently, with Gazette a frequent part of the title.
