Government Ready To Buy Butter And Beef For Needy

$15,000,000 Worth To Be Purchased-Eggs Soon To Be Added, Is Belief

WASHINGTON (AP) Purchases of $15,000,000 worth of butter and beef today was the government's latest step in its program for feeding surplus food stuffs to the needy.

At the rate of two million or more pounds a week, government money will dig into a butter surplus estimated at 70,000,000 pounds. Simultaneously it will buy an undetermined quantity of beef in the canner and cutter grades. Readiness to make the purchases was announced by Harry L. Hopkins, relief administrator and Secy. Wallace. There were indications that before long eggs will be added to the surplus-relief buying.

"Needy people of the relief rolls in many communities," Hopkins said, "have not been supplied with nearly sufficient quantities of meat and butter while cattle, dairy and hog growers are suffering from poor markets." The farm administration already has bought 100,000,000 pounds of pork.

This article on the front page of the Greenfield Daily Recorder-Gazette announces a plan for the federal government to buy butter and beef for the poor. The origins of this program lie in the efforts of the New Deal to raise the prices of farm goods to increase the income of farmers. To accomplish this goal, the New Deal's Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA) encouraged farmers to reduce the production of grain, livestock and other farm products. Fewer products on the market would cause higher prices, it was hoped. In the early fall of 1933, the AAA killed millions of young pigs. The slaughter of livestock while unemployed workers went hungry caused an outcry and led to the creation of the Federal Surplus Relief Corporation. Within two years, the FSRC had distributed approximately $265 million dollars worth or farm products to the poor.
