Pilgrim's Progress, written by John Bunyan in 1678, was standard reading in schools in the eighteenth century. Photographers Frances and Mary Allen costumed and carefully posed a young boy with "the book" by the light of a candle. The Colonial Revival of the early twentieth century and the public interest in historical fiction gave the Allen sisters many ideas for carefully posed pictures.
