Frances and Mary Allen (1858-1941) of Deerfield, Massachusetts, were 2 of the best early glass-plate camerawomen. Their photographs often do not report life but rather show life, as the Allens wanted it to be, story-like and peaceful. The sisters printed 4 catalogs of their work and their photographs were often used in books written by others. "Little Puritan" appeared first in a catalog printed in 1911. The photograph is colonial revival and makes this view of history seem like a sort of stage performance.
