John Stebbins (1647-1724) served with Capt. Lathrop during King Philip's War and lived through the battle at Bloody Brook. He was one of the permanent settlers of Deerfield in 1682. His house was burned in the attack of 1704 and his whole family was taken to Canada; only he, his wife, and one son, John returned. The grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren still lived on land near this spot until the early 20th century. The photograph of the marker was taken about 1910 by Mary and Frances Allen.
