It was common in the early years of photography and even into the 1920s, to show the family house, family members, and their most important things. In this late-19th century family scene, the 4-wheel coach is shown near the back of the house. The 2 children play croquet while 8 adults look on. First played in Ireland in the 1840s, croquet was a popular outdoor lawn game for families and groups who could afford grassy lawns around their homes.
