Frank O. Wells was a machinist who went on to start a tool business in Greenfield, Massachusetts. In 1905 he had the idea for The Weldon, which he wanted to be used for apartments and business rooms. However, he soon decided it would be a better idea to turn the building into a hotel. Complete with wicker furniture and fern-filled porches, the all-concrete hotel soon became one of the nicest and most expensive hotels in the area.
