label levels:

In the 19th century, rugs on the floors in houses became common, unlike the century before when bare, scrubbed floors had been the standard. With floor rugs in general use, new devices appeared on the market to keep them clean and free of dust. This dust beater, with its wooden handle and metal beaters, served that purpose.
