English artisans printed pictures of popular heroes, such as Lafayette and Franklin, on their pottery to interest an American market. The Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834) made a successful tour of the United States in 1824 when he visited the grave of American statesman Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790). Franklin was enormously popular in France and played an important role in getting the French alliance during the American Revolution.
