The turn of the twentieth century saw the birth of city department stores such as Macy's and chain stores like A&P. New items such as readymade clothing, canned goods, and processed foods appeared on store shelves all over the United States. Like other stores in this period, the goods were attractively displayed in glass showcases and one of the store's employees would take out what a customer wished to examine or buy.
