Not until the twentieth century did white become the traditional color for a woman to wear on her wedding day. Brides wore brown, gray and other colors. A woman did not expect to use such a gown only once; fine fabrics were too costly to make into a one-event garment. Diadama Morgan (1764-1788) wore this blue wool gown at her wedding to Phineas Field of Northfield in 1785.
