label levels:

This table made space for more people around it by swinging out fancy "gate legs" to hold up two hinged pieces called "drop leaves". To save space, the owner could lower the leaves when not in use. Making a table like this used the tools and skills of at least 2 craftspeople: a turner to "turn" the legs on a lathe, and a joiner to make the rest of the pieces and "join" all of them together.
