Stall-fed oxen were, up until the time of the railroads, the major "crop" in Deerfield, Massachusetts. This treatise by Deerfield's historian, George Sheldon, speaks from the first person, since Mr. Sheldon (1818-1916) was involved in all the seasonal chores he describes. His language is picuresque and nostalgic as he recalls life on the farm in the first half of the 19th century.
