To all persons to whom these presents shall come, Greeting:
I CERTIFY that Epaphras Hoyt -- has,
this fourth day of June---, in the year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred and twenty-five, and of Independence the forty-ninth
deposited in the Office of the Department of State, a certain Book--
consisting of 312 pages--entitled

Antiquarian Researches: comprising a History of the
Indian Wars on the Country bordering Connecticut River
and parts adjacent and other interesting events
from the first landing of the pilgrims to the
conquest of Canada by the English in 1760
with Notices of Indian Depredations in the
neighboring Country and of the first planting
and progress of settlements in New England
New York, and Canada. By E. Hoyt, Esqr.



the copy-right whereof is claimed by Epaphras Hoyt
as author
under the provisions of "An act for the encouragement
of Learning, by securing the copies of Maps, Charts, and Books, to the Authors and Proprie-
tors of such copies, during the times therein mentioned," passed on the 31st day of May, A.D.
1790, and of "An act supplementary to an act, entitled ‘An act for the encouragement of
Learning, by securing the copies of Maps, Charts, and Books, to the Authors and Proprietors
of such copies, during the time therein mentioned,’ and extending the benefits thereof, to the
arts of designing, engraving, and etching, historical and other prints," passed on the 29th of
April, A.D. 1802.
Given under my hand, as the Secretary of the Department of State of the United
States, with the Seal of the said Department affixed, at the City of Wash-
ington, the day and year first above written.

The document, a copyright agreement for a book, "Antiquarian Researches", written by Epaphras Hoyt of Deerfield, Massachusetts, is dated 1825 and is signed by the Secretary of State. Epaphras Hoyt (1765-1850) published several books and articles during his long lifetime. Mr. Hoyt was active in town affairs and had particular interest in the history of the Connecticut Valley. This agreement for the 312-page book with a short title of Antiquarian Researches and a longer title that fills five lines in the document, is subject to the provisions of United States copyright law, passed in 1790, supplemented by another passed in 1802. The copyright protects the author's material from unlawful use by others.
