George Sheldon was a Deerfield, Massachusetts, historian who wrote a great amount about the start of the town and its early history. His biography of Deerfield, Massachusetts' first settled minister was mostly about the Reverend John Williams's (1664-1729) genealogy and early life experiences. Although his title referred to Williams as "The Redeemed Captive," Sheldon's book ended before the French and Indian raid on the town in 1704 when Williams was taken captive along with over 100 of his followers.
