Supplying the Revolutionary troops with the bare necessities was difficult because the new nation had so little money. Ordinary Americans supported the war effort by providing clothing and food as well as by paying taxes. These residents of Deerfield, Massachusetts, pledged to supply shoes, shirts and breeches for Deerfield militiamen in 1778.
