Elihu Hoit






You being appointed Major - Sergeant
in the second Regiment, second Brigade,
and fourth Division of the Militia of Massachusetts :
By Virtue of the Power vested in me, I do by these Presents, grant
you this Warrant : -- You are therefore, carefully and diligently to
discharge the Duty of Major -- Sergeant, according to the
Laws and Regulations, established for the good Order, Government
and Discipline of the Militia ; all inferior Officers and Soldiers, are
hereby commanded to obey you as their Major-Sergeant ; and you
are yourself to observe and follow such Orders and Instructions, as
you shall from Time to Time receive from your superior Officers.

Given under my Hand, at Deerfield this twenty sixth Day of
June One Thousand seven Hundred and Ninety four

In the 18th century, the most active and best prepared militia was in Massachusetts. The recruitment for members of the militia continued even after the Revolutionary War had ended. Mr. Hoyt (1771-1833) was instructed in 1794 to "observe and follow sutch [sic] Orders and Instructions, as you shall from Time to Time receive from your superior Officers."
