Ten items of business are listed on the warrant to come before the meeting in December of 1775. The warrant is drawn up by the selectmen with the assistance of the town clerk in each town. Deerfield voters are asked to consider questions of schooling, town roads, payments of debts owed by the town, and three questions having to do with the minister, Jonathan Ashley. It is 1775 and Mr. Ashley has been outspoken about his opposition to the patriot cause. The town will vote whether to continue his ministry, to raise his salary, and whether or not to provide his firewood for the coming year.
