Deerfield Mass

My dear Mr Sheldon;-

After thinking more
about the matter of the street-
railway, I decided that it was
not best for me to come to
Boston. The feeling is very
high here. I think the
railroad is sure to come thro
the street. The whole business
element is on that side, and
I am not a property holder.
Were it a question of right
and wrong, I would not
have hesitated. As it is I
think it is a matter for the
citizens to fight out among
themselves. However, it is a

This February 13, 1900, letter from George W. Holley to George Sheldon complains about the fact that the trolley is certain to come through the village street of Deerfield, since "the whole business element is on that side." Mr. Holley does not live in Deerfield and, although he likes Mr. Sheldon, argues that it is a matter for the townspeople to fight out among themselves. Public opinion against the Railroad Corporation is a good thing in Mr. Holley's view, "for it will show the R.R. Corporation they cannot ride rough shod over us."
