Washington February 5th 37

My dear Sir

The bearer Mr Arthur W. Hoyt is
a young gentleman of Massachusetts, who comes
exceedingly well recommended to me, as an Engineer

He has been employed in several important
works, such as rail roads etc and has given great
satisfaction --. Mr Loami Baldwin, the most
distinguished man among us in that line speaks
of Mr Hoyt in high terms.

As he proposes to visit your part of the
country, I am happy to introduce him to your
notice & regard.

Yours with much

Danl Webster

In the 19th century, when a person was traveling to a foreign country or to an unfamiliar part of one's own country, a letter of introduction such as this would serve as a way to meet the appropriate people for business or for social reasons. A letter of introduction from the Secretary of State of the country would be a powerful tool for a young engineer such as Arthur Wellesley Hoyt (1811-1899) of Deerfield, Massachusetts.
