Chests like this one made in the Hadley, Massachusetts, area, in the late 17th and early 18th centuries are often both carved and painted. This chest has only paint, with much of the design made by a compass. It has 2 drawers and a lift top and was used to hold materials such as sheets, blankets and tablecloths. The initials "SW" on the front are for the first owner.
